Managing HIV/AIDS Therapy in Treatment-Experienced Patients:
Regimen Change Request Case Study

Case Presentation: Helena A. Kwakwa, MD, MPH

A 44-year-old male patient returns to the office demanding a change in his HAART regimen, one that is currently effective and well tolerated. Diagnosed in 2001, his CD4+ cell count was 180 cells/mm3 and his viral load was 140,000 copies/mL. He was placed on AZT/3TC + NVP and continues to do fairly well. He visits the office in February 2005.

Patient's Condition in 02/2005:

CD4+ cell count: 530 cells/mm3
Viral load: <50 copies/mL
Very adherent to regimen; no complaints
Requests change to TruvadaTM (FTC/TDF) and EFV
