My mother has a heart defibrillator and recently had a small malignant
tumour removed from her breast. She has been put on a course of oral
medication to control recurrence of the tumour because she was told
there is a relatively high risk that radiation therapy would interfere
with the defibrillator. We are wondering how high the risks really are
- after all, the defibrillator was disconnected when she had her
original surgery to remove the lump and we assume this could be done
during any radiation treatments that might take place. She would really
rather have radiation therapy if she could as she is convinced it is
more effective for preventing a recurrence of her cancer. Does anybody
have any experience with cancer radiation therapy in patients with
defibrillators or pacemakers?
