The anti-malignin antibody (AMA) test was positive for early detection of
cancer in 118 of 125 cases. Of the 56 patients who were monitored a correlation
between the level of AMA and clinical status was 94.1 percent.

Tumor marker assessment was carried out in 154 patients by evaluation
of neuron specific enolase (NSE), Carcinoembryonic antigens (CEA) and
tissue Polypeptide antigen (TPA). Of 60 patients with small cell lung
cancer (SCLC) TPA and NSE values were positive in 96.6%. In 69.1% of 94
non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients, at least on of the three
markers was positive. Serum levels of NSE failed to differentiate SCLC
from NSCLC. Levels of NSE and TPA in SCLC and those of TPA and CEA in
NSCLC appeared to reflect the tumor burden.

The structuredness of cytoplasmic matrix (SCM) of stimulated
lymphocytes discriminated between people and patients even with
locoregional colorectal cancer. The SCM test also distinguished Duke C
patients from those with metastasis. Distribution of intracellular
fluorescein fluorescence polarization values and their ratios differed
according to whether the lymphocytes were from healthy subjects or from
colorectal cancer patients.

Thirty-five of 46 patients with active melanoma in stages I and
II were detected by intracellular fluorescein fluorescent
polarization (IFFP) of the structuredness of cytoplasmic matrix
responding lymphocytes, while only half of the 11 patients in stage
III were positive. The sensitivity and specificity for detection of
melanoma by IFFP test were 73.9% and 90.6% respectively.

G-actin levels predicted risk of recurrence by quantitative
fluorescence image analysis of uroepithelial cells from bladder wash
samples immediately or following intravesical bacille
Calmette-Guerin or dimethylsulfoxide treatment. Biochemically
altered cells were frequently also found within adjacent
normal-appearing uroepithelium as a "field effect."

Fine needle biopsies of melanoma permitted establishment of cell
lines and provided an efficient and effective method for sequential
sampling of a neoplasm and analysis of the growth and development of
tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte populations. A strong correlation
existed in melanoma antigen expression between fresh tumor explants
and cultured cell lines.

We have investigated the use of RT-PCR
monitoring in AML with the chromosomal
translocations t8;21)-AMLl/ETO in M2 (Ml, M4), the
t(15;17)-PML/RARalpha in M3 and the inv(16)-CBFB/MYH11 in M4Eo.
Minimal residual disease was detectable with a sensitivity of 10(-5)
- 10(-6) cells. All 10 pts. with M3 were PML/RAR alpha-positive.
PCR-remission was achieved...

To assess the possible cytogenetic consequences of occupational
exposure to petrochemicals, the frequencies of chromosomal
aberrations (CA) and sister-chromatic exchanges (SCE) in cultured
lymphocytes were studied. Blood was obtained from 233 individuals
(184 exposed and 49 worksite control) in an oil refinery and from 47
community control persons....
