Tumorgenesis in the liver of flatfish from the north sea and early cellular biomarkers for a pollution monitoring

Two flatfish species (flounder, dab) were investigated in the North Sea and adjacent estuaries on international stations of the joint Monitoring Group (Oslo/Paris Commission). Histopathological studies were performed in order to identify early liver lesions and their progression towards liver tumors. Injury of the lysosomal compartment, playing...

Predicting disease progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia by monitoring high risk HPV oncoproteins with quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR and novel immunocytochemical E6-E7 biomarkers

To evaluate the relationship between quantities of viral transforming gene transcripts and cervical intraepithelial disease progression by monitoring oncogenic E6/E7 and HPV viral proteins with quantitative RT-PCR and novel E6 and E7 immunocytochemical biomarkers in paraffin-embedded biopsies. To study the correlation between the progression...

Intraoperative Ultrasonography of Liver: Detection of Occult Liver Tumors and Treatment by Cryosurgery

In 110 patients undergoing liver surgery the usefulness of intraoperative ultrasonography for detection of occult liver tumors was demonstrated.

Mammography Screening Controversies

Analysis of results from 6 mammography-screening centers failed to show evidence that in women aged 40 to 49 screening reduced cancer mortality significantly. Screening of wome

Increased Levels of a 21-kDa protein in the Circulation of Tumor-Bearing Patients

Sera from 124 patients and 43 healthy controls were tested by the enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay (ELISA) for a novel non-ras 21-KDa protein (p21). Elevated levels were present in 4.6% of healthy controls, in 78.2% of patients with renal cell carcinoma, in 66% with gastrointestinal cancer and in 77.7% with malignant lymphoma. In several patients a favorable response to therapy correlated with a decline in p21 serum levels.

Usefulness of CEA, TPA, GICA, CA 72.4, And CA 195 in the Diagnosis of Primary Colorectal Cancer and At its Relapse

Serial follow-up analyses of colorectal cancer patients by post operative serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), tissue polypeptide antigen (TPA) and gastrointestinal cancer antigen (GICA) permitted identification of micrometastases. The sensitivity for detection of recurrence was 87% for TPA and 93% for the combina of TPA and GICA.

Is Tobacco Use Finally Decreasing in France?

A national population survey of the adolescent and adult French population was conducted to evaluate trends in smoking behavior from 1977 to 1991. Smoking decreased in both sexes of adolescents from 46% in 1977 to 30% in 1991. In the adult population the overall rate was stable and although smoking decreased among men the trend was counterbalanced by an increase in women.

Priorities for Cancer Control in Poland

Deaths from cancer in Poland are expected to increase by over 60% during the next 20 years due to aging of the population and increasing age-standardized male cancer mortality. Five-year survivals are much lower than in developed Western countries. Improvement of statistics of cancer incidence and survival in different regions of Poland is...

Serum CEA, CA 15-3, and MCA in Breast Cancer Patients: A Clinical Evaluation

With the aim of investigating the clinical usefulness of CEA, CA 15-3, and MCA serum levels, we studied 143 women whose breast cancer was submitted to serial tumor marker determinations: 79 women had stage I-II tumors and were undergoing follow-up after local and adjuvant treatment; 64 women presented metastatic lesions. Among the stage I-II...
