Anti-inflammatory drugs may prevent breast cancer
    [08/22/2000; Reuters News Service]

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Two anti-inflammatory drugs--ibuprofen
and celecoxib--prevented breast cancer in rats treated with chemicals
to induce the cancer. The finding raises hope that these drugs
may also be used one day to prevent and treat breast cancer in
humans. ``Our results are the first to show dramatic suppression
of (breast cancer development) in this model by COX-2 blockade,''
according to Dr. Randall E. Harris, of Ohio State University
College of Medicine in Columbus, and associates. In breast tumors,
two genes--COX-1 and COX-2--are somehow turned on in the cell's
process of becoming cancerous. Ibuprofen blocks both gene products,
and celecoxib specifically blocks COX-2, the authors explain
in the journal Cancer Research. Because recent studies linked
the regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
with a lower rate of breast cancer, the researchers investigated
whether two such NSAIDs, ibuprofen and celecoxib, could prevent
the breast tumors that develop in rats after exposure to the
chemical DMBA. Untreated rats developed 127 tumors, compared with
only 61 tumors in ibuprofen-treated rats and 18 tumors in celecoxib-treated
rats, the report indicates.
