CHICAGO (Reuters Health) - Computer experts are developing
a virtual microscope that will let physicians study
slides of digitized tissue samples sent via the Internet
instead of traditional slides. Researchers expect that the device
will speed up the diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, and help
doctors to get expert opinions on difficult cases more quickly. The
digital microscope will be available for classroom use within
six months, according to Dr. Alan Sussman, a University of Maryland
computer scientist who gave a preview of the device during a
scientific session, ``Next Generation Informatics for Diagnostic
Medicine,'' Monday at the World Congress of Medical Physics and
Biomedical Engineering here.
