I have been diagnosed with diverticulitus and am on a regimen of Zantac and Metamusil. The specialist also told me not to eat nuts, seeds, nor popcorn. As I am in an HMO, I cannot question the specalist. My GP just says that it is important to follow the specalist's instructions. How important is it and why?
You're fortunate that your condition is stabilised/controlled with Zantac (decreases gastric secretions) and Metamucil (a bulk-forming laxative) - in this situation, the state of the bowel can so easily deteriorate with surgery a likely outcome - nuts and seeds, and presumably also popcorn, are poorly digested as we normally consume them so that physical contact with with your bowel lesions could result in a tissue insult and flare up as a likely consequence - in your position I'd be inclined to follow the specialist's instructions.

However, she was just given quinine tablets and no dietary information. She left the doctors surgery with no further information than she arrived with. She has been nursing my father for the past year who has just died with lung cancer and the doctor says this diverticulitus can be derived from a lot of strain - the stress of my fathers illness seems to be what brought her down, is this possible.I see your address is 'cancer', is this an associated disease as all her family have had cancer, mother and sisters and this was her biggest fear. Can you tell me if this is governed by a special diet, another friend of mine has just been told they have it and he says it is. He was also given antibiotics and some special medication.I would like to tell her what is best for her to do - seek more info from doctor or see the dietician when I see here tomorrow - can you help me?RegardsAnne
