Dear Anne: I don't believe diverticulitis is an associated disease, but I
know that stress can definitely make it worse, and doctors do watch it
carefully. Diet is very important. I have a spastic colon (also known as
Irritable Bowel Syndrome) myself, and I have to watch my diet very carefully,
which can be very annoying. This problem was not caused by my cancer, but
was made worse by chemotherapy. Diverticulitis is unpleasant and
uncomfortable, but definitely treatable and not life-threatening. I would
recommend a good gastroenterologist for your mother.
