The event will be the first of this kind ever held in the homeland of the 1,300-year-old unique system of medical research, clinical practice and drug use. "Tibetan medicine is a vital part of both the traditional Tibetan culture and traditional medicine of China. We hope the meeting will help promote its development for the sake of the people's health around the world," said Zhu Guoben, president of the China Medical Association of Minorities. The association is organizing the symposium together with the health department of the Tibet Autonomous Region and the Tibetan Medicine College in Lhasa. President Zhu described Tibetan medicine as "having unique theoretical system, rich experience in clinical practice and aboriginal pharmaceutical resources" in accordance with high- altitude, low-temperature and anoxic environment in the Tibet- Qinghai Plateau, dubbed as "roof of the world". "Up to now, Tibetan medicine has still been shared by the Chinese nation as an important public health resource," he noted. There have been 57 hospitals and three research institutes specializing in Tibetan medicine throughout China, with more than 3,000 medical professionals. Besides Tibetan medicine colleges set up in Tibet and Qinghai, Tibetan medicine courses have been offered in colleges of traditional Chinese medicine in provinces of Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan. |
