NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Most women are aware of the importance
of mammograms for early detection of breast cancer, but not all
realize that a clinical breast exam is also important. Recent
findings suggest that these physical exams may help detect breast
cancer early. ``Some US data suggest a decline in the use of clinical
breast exams concurrent with increasing use of mammography. In
some European countries, routine breast cancer screening relies
primarily on mammography,'' explain researchers from the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, led by
Dr. Janet Kay Bobo. Yet according to their research findings,
published in the June 21st issue of the Journal of the National
Cancer Institute, clinical breast exams (CBEs) may add to the
effectiveness of early-detection campaigns. The researchers analyzed
the data from the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection
Program, in which more than 750,000 low-income women received
CBEs.
