Sugar and especially white, refined sugar can deplete
the body of many necessary nutrients.  Among them are
several, which are involved in the production of
neurotransmitters,(the messenger chemicals of the
brain).  Read a book called "Sugar Blues".  You will
learn a lot.  The herbs Saint John's Wort and valerian
root have reportedly been effective with depression. 
There is also a substance called 5-hydroxytryptophane,
which has been placed on the market after the bogus
ban on L-tryptophane was instituted, This has
essentially the same effect as l-tryptophane in that
it increases the amount of a neurotransmitter called
serotonin, which is involved in depression.  I hope
