A new memory-boosting substance has emerged,
according to a recent survey of 20 years of medical research. Vinpocetine
is an extract derived from the periwinkle (Vinca minor) plant, and it seems
to increase blood circulation and oxygen use in the brain. It also shields
the brain from losing its ability to transport oxygen—a contributing factor
in memory loss. Researchers at the University of Surrey in England tested
vinpocetine’s effect on 203 patients with mild to moderate dementia (loss
of mental ability; Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia). The researchers
found that the group taking vinpocetine exhibited significantly greater
mental ability compared to the placebo group. Several smaller studies have
demonstrated vinpocetine’s memory benefits on healthy individuals. It has
also been successfully used to treat certain eye disorders such as macular
degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Julian Whitaker, M.D.,
editor of Health & Healing newsletter, recommends two brands of vinpocetine
for people wishing to maintain their "mental edge;" these products are
available through Life Enhancement (1340 Industrial Avenue, Suite A, Petaluma,
CA 94952; Tel: 800-543-3873) and Thorne Research (P.O. Box 25, Dover, ID
83825; Tel: 208-263-1337).
