First an article appeared in Newsweek. The
PR machine was inmotion for the "miracle product" SAMe --S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine.
Next,SAMe was touted on ABC's "Good Morning, America" as the answer todepression
and possibly arthritic problems. Popular in Eurpope, thistablet form of
a naturally occurring substance in the body is coming toAmerica like the
Beatles did so many years ago.
"SAMe may well turn out to be a pharmaceutical
'Trojan Horse' in the camp of unsuspecting dietary supplement manufacturers
and consumers," claimsAl Czap, the publisher of Alternative
Medicine Review, a peer-reviewed medical journal of clinical therapeutics.
Thousands of pounds of the pure raw material have been sold in the past
few weeks to various U.S. manufacturers eager to jump on the SAMe bandwagon.
SAMe imported from Europe as a finished dose, or tabletted is made from
a highly unstable material liable to deteriorate without proper handling.
The negative repercussion six months hence from such a product may well
be tremendous," says Czap. "I would hate to see poorly manufactured knockoffs,
the Sons of SAMe, provide ammunition to the opponents of dietary supplements."
For complete information on SAMe, search
Health Conditions on the home
page, and enter "S-Adenosyl " in the keyword search when prompted.
