To all interested,
I wanted to give you a 'heads up' about a cancer documentary feature to
be shown on HBO. I have previewed the segment and highly recommend it.
A summary of the production is copied below.
'HBO will be premiering an informative documentary on cancer research,
detection, treatment, prevention, patient advocacy, and political
activism on March 30th at 8 p.m. EST. The documentary presents
information on:
. cancer statistics
. the burden of cancer in the United States
. the revolution in cancer research
. resources for information on cancer research, prevention,
detection,treatment, support and advocacy
. personal experiences with cancer and
. Congress and cancer.
The documentary explores innovations in cancer research which, Dr.
Klausner notes, have changed cancer from an automatic death sentence to
a disease that is increasingly preventable, detectable in early stages,
and treatable, while acknowledging the many challenges which lay ahead
in the quest for a cancer cure. The program's main goal is to empower
the public by educating them about cancer discoveries and applications,
so that they can:
. understand the complexity of the disease
. learn effective ways of preventing and treating it and
. have access to resources to help them understand the disease or
guidethem through the myriad of choices cancer patients face
. understand the importance of participating in clinical trials and
. understand the important role of the government in funding
cancer research.
Interviews feature cancer survivors and cancer experts including:
. Senator Connie Mack (R-FL)
. Ellen Stovall, Executive Director, National Coalition for Cancer
Survivorship (NCCS)
. Dr. Richard Klausner, Director, NCI
. Dr. Bert Vogelstein, MD, Director, Molecular Genetics Lab,
Johns Hopkins Oncology Center
. Leslie Ford, MD, Director of Chemoprevention Trials, National
Cancer Institute and
. Jim Mulshine, MD, Senior Investigator, National Cancer Institute.
There are also clips featuring childhood cancer patients.
In conjunction with the documentary, HBO has launched a cancer website:
http://www.hbo.com/cancer/noflash_home.shtml which has links to
organizations and resources, basic information on cancer, and patient
advocacy information.
Mark your calendars,
God Bless you,
marty auslander
