Only seven years ago, less than $90 million in federal funding was spent annually on breast cancer research. This month, Congress passed a bill allocating $175 million to the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (DOD BCRP), boosting the program's tally to more than $1 billion.

The BCRP was created in 1993 as part of the National Breast Cancer Coalition's (NBCC) "$300 Million More" campaign. The NBCC convinced Congress to spend $210 million of the 1993 DOD budget on a unique peer-reviewed breast cancer research program. For the first time, government money went right to breast cancer research, rather than to the National Cancer Institute to be divvied up among cancers.

The NBCC is pleased with the increase. "The additional funding will allow more research to be conducted that's innovative, translational and extremely important in our goal of finding optimal ways to cure, treat and ultimately prevent breast cancer," said Jennifer Levine, communications director of the NBCC. --Carin Gorrell
