Doctors would be banned from prescribing narcotics to 
help patients commit suicide, even if their state laws permit
it, under a bill approved by the House on Wednesday. The measure,
which passed 271-156, effectively would overturn an Oregon law
allowing doctor-assisted suicide, and would supersede similar
provisions being considered in other states. Its passage irked
officials in Oregon and was fought by several medical associations,
which oppose federal involvement in defining medical care.
