FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- October 25, 1999 -- The results of a study comparing oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC) and immediate-release morphine sulfate (IRMS) show OTFC provided superior analgesia in patients with breakthrough cancer pain.

The results of this study were presented during a poster session at the American Pain Society (APS) Conference, in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Patients with cancer-related pain who were also opioid-tolerant, were treated with around-the-clock opioids and a stable and effective dose of IRMS for breakthrough cancer pain. The dosage level of OTFC and IRMS was determined by patients reports of pain relief.

Patients in the study reported pain intensity difference at 15-minute intervals, with a summary of pain difference and total pain relief showing significant differences favoring OTFC at all time points.

The researchers concluded that OTFC provided superior analgesia compared with IRMS for cancer-related breakthrough pain at 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes post-administration. Reported adverse events of somnolence, nausea and constipation were consistent with opioid therapy, according to the researchers.
