Integrative Medicine Service:
Your
Guide to Integrative Medicine
and Complementary Therapies
Our Integrative Medicine program is designed to enhance patients' and
family members' quality of life through healing regimens that address the
body, mind, and spirit. We offer the best of complementary therapies, such
as many types of massage, spiritual healing, art and music therapy,
acupuncture, hypnotherapy, meditation, guided imagery and visualization,
yoga, t'ai chi, nutritional counseling, and more.
Memorial Sloan-Kettering, the world's oldest and largest private
institution devoted to prevention, patient care, research, and education
in cancer, has consistently set the standard of care for people with this
disease. The hallmark of care at MSK is the most effective treatment and
best possible quality of life for people with cancer. The Integrative
Medicine Service is the next step in expanding this philosophy.
Information resources are available at each location, as are services
to meet patients' unique emotional, social, and spiritual needs. Each site
provides a serene and comforting environment. Our highly experienced
therapists are appropriately trained and certified. They have been
carefully selected for their skill and sensitivity to give you the most
satisfying healing experiences available anywhere.
Locations and Services
Integrative Medicine services are
available at three locations:
- For MSK outpatients and their families, the Rockefeller
Outpatient Pavilion at 160 East 53rd Street, at Third
Avenue, offers information as well as several therapies, including
meditation, music and sound audiotapes, relaxation, massage, and imagery
therapies. This site -- geared to help patients and their families relax
before and after treatment -- also provides a home away from home … a
place to read, talk, and relax. Integrative Medicine is located on the
pavilion's 11th floor. For information and appointments,

- For MSK inpatients and their families, music and massage therapy
programs and relaxation therapies such as meditation and imagery are
available at no charge, and other therapies can be arranged according to
patients' needs at Memorial Hospital, located at 1275 York
Avenue, between 67th and 68th Streets. For

- For outpatients and their families, the Integrative Medicine
Outpatient Center at 303 East 65th Street, at Second
Avenue -- opening in Fall 1999 -- will offer the program's entire suite
of services and therapies, described below. This location will also be
open to non-MSK cancer patients and their families. For information and

Integrative Medicine centers include:
Dr. Barrie R. Cassileth
A noted researcher
and medical educator, Dr. Barrie R. Cassileth is the first Chief of the
Integrative Medicine Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Her interest in complementary and alternative medicine began more than 20
years ago, and grew out of her work with cancer patients who combined
mainstream medicine with other approaches. She holds a Ph.D. in medical
sociology from the University of Pennsylvania, where she was also on the
faculty of the School of Medicine. While Associate Director of the
University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center, Dr. Cassileth developed programs
in hospice, home care, counseling, and research. Most recently, she was an
adjunct faculty member at Duke University Medical Center and a visiting
lecturer at Harvard University. Dr. Cassileth is the author of The
Alternative Medicine Handbook: The Complete Reference Guide to Alternative
and Complementary Therapies.
