WASHINGTON, July 21 (Reuters) - A whole new approach to the 
popular idea of ``starving out'' tumors has worked in mice, 
U.S., Canadian and Israeli scientists said on Wednesday.

Their new drug, which they call Exherin, stopped the growth 
of breast and ovarian tumors in mice, the researchers reported. 
They said they set up a company to develop and exploit the

``Testing in my lab showed that Exherin stopped tumor growth,'' 
Dr. Riaz Farookhi of McGill University in Montreal said in a 

``What is particularly exciting and impressive is that the 
effects on tumor growth occur so quickly, within 24 hours.''

The new approach aims to starve tumors of their blood supply 
by attacking the blood vessels they grow.
