NEW YORK, Jun 10 (Reuters Health) -- Women with stage I breast
cancer -- where the cancer has not spread -- who have breast-conserving
surgery are more likely to survive when axillary lymph node dissection,
also known as AND, is performed as part of the surgery, a team
of US researchers report. The efficacy of AND, a surgical procedure
where armpit lymph nodes are removed,in patients with stages
I and II breast cancer has come under scrutiny. The study, which
looked at survival rates in women with breast cancer over a decade,
found that ''10-year survival is significantly worse when AND
is omitted,'' according to Dr. Kirby Bland of Brown University
in Providence, Rhode Island and colleagues.
