Glycolipids May Be T-Cell Targets In Autoimmune Disorders

WESTPORT, May 24 (Reuters Health) - Patients with multiple
sclerosis (MS) are more likely than controls to have T cells that
are specific for a variety of self glycolipids, researchers in
Switzerland report. They infer that self glycolipids may be a
source of autoantigens recognized by T cells in MS, and perhaps
in other autoimmune diseases. Although T cells reactive against
various protein components of myelin have already been identified
in MS patients, "[g]lycolipids, which are the most abundant
components of myelin, may represent an additional target of the
autoimmune attack in MS," Dr. Abdijapar Shamshiev, of University
Hospital Basel in Switzerland, and colleagues suspected.
