[MOL] Re: end-of-life decisions

Patients want families to make end-of-life decisions
    [05/18/99; Reuters News Service]

NEW YORK, May 17 (Reuters Health) -- Most patients turn to family
members rather than physicians when it comes to making decisions
regarding end-of-life care, according to a study of patients
with kidney failure. The study findings also ``indicate that when
end-of-life decisions need to be made, patients want their family
members to have the legal authority to make them,'' according
to the report, published in the May 18th issue of the Annals
of Internal Medicine. The findings ``suggest that most patients
do not want a physician-oriented approach to advance care planning,''
write a team of investigators led by Dr. Alvin Moss of West Virginia
University in Morgantown, West Virginia.
