Boston patients to be first tests of powerful anticancer drug
[05/18/99; Boston Globe]
Patients in Boston will be the first volunteers this fall to receive
doses of endostatin, the tumor-starving drug whose dramatic effects
in mice have galvanized the medical community and raised hopes
of cancer patients everywhere. Endostatin is the most potent
yet discovered of substances called angiogenesis inhibitors,
which can destroy the blood vessels that feed tumors - without
harming normal cells. In combination with other drugs, these
inhibitors may open a new chapter in which cancer will be kept
harmlessly in check for many years, without exposing patients
to the grueling side effects of today's treatments. The trials
will be undertaken at Dana-Farber/Partners Cancer Care, which
includes the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Brigham and Women's
Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital, said officials
of EntreMed, the Maryland biotech company that is developing
the drug. The initial test, known as a Phase I trial, could take
a year or more, and will involve only about 25 patients in Boston.
