Re: [MOL] pre and post mastectomy exercises

I guess I should answer this. Of course I know nothing about pre-mastectomy
exercises. That is something one doesn't have time to prepare for very far
in advance. However I know a couple of things about post surgery exercise.

First of all, I did not have a mastectomy; I had a lumpectomy with axillary
dissection. The results are not as severe as the mastectomy but since both
affect the arm on the side affected they have some similarities.

After surgery one must move the arm, even though it hurts a lot. My surgeon
had me walk my fingers up the wall. I have also been to exercise class
explanations that are sponsored by the physical therapy section of the
hospital. They teach a dance therapy class that encourages much movement of
the arms.

Other factors must be considered besides exercise. The arm where the lymph
nodes have been removed must be protected from injury (burns, cuts and
scratches) since the lymphatic system has been compromised. Wear protective
gloves and sleeves when cooking and gardening.

If you have any other questions that I might be able to help with you may
feel free to email me.
