Philadelphia-Negative Stem Cell Autografts May Restore
Hematopoiesis In CML
WESTPORT, Mar 09 (Reuters Health) - In a subset of patients in
the early chronic stage of chronic myelogenous leukemia,
autografting with Philadelphia chromosome-negative mobilized
hematopoietic stem cells is well tolerated and can result in
prolonged hematopoietic recovery. In the March 1st issue of
Blood, a multicenter Italian team led by Dr. Angelo M. Carella,
of Ospedale San Martino in Genoa, reports that they autografted
30 such patients with hematopoietic stem cells after high-dose
chemotherapy. In 22 cases, all cells were negative for the
Philadelphia chromosome, and in all but two other cases, no more
than 34% of the cells were positive for the chromosome. All
patients received interleukin-2 and interferon-alpha
postgrafting.
God Bless
