Radioactive Probe Assesses Feasibility Of Forgoing Axillary Node

WESTPORT, Feb 17 (Reuters Health) - The use of a radioactive
probe to identify the sentinel lymph node may obviate the need
for axillary node dissection during treatment of breast cancer or
cancer staging, according to a report in the Journal of the
National Cancer Institute. Dr. Umberto Veronesi and colleagues,
of the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, injected
radiolabeled albumin close to the tumor or subdermally over the
tumor in 376 consecutive women with breast cancer who were
undergoing total axillary dissection.
