[MOL] TODAY'S NEW'S- Gene's role in a wide range of cancers

Gene's Role In a Wide Range of Cancers

Researchers have reported discovering that a particular mutated gene appears to play a role in many more types of cancer than previously believed. Researchers at the Institute of Cancer Research in London tested 243 cancer cell lines from various types of cancer to collect data. It was found that a mutated form of the Bcl10 gene was present in 70 of 155 lymphoma cell lines tested, in 2 of 25 colon cancer lines, 2 of 18 leukemia lines, 3 of 3 mesothelioma (a type of lung cancer) lines, and 3 of 3 testicular cancer lines. Authors note that only the p53 gene has been implicated in a wider range of cancer than Bcl10 and that the Bcl10 gene had previously been thought to play a role only in B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The findings are in the journal Cell (1999;96:35-45).
