WESTPORT, Jan 08 (Reuters Health) - High levels of tissue
plasminogen activator antigen are a marker of stroke risk in
young women. High TPA antigen levels are likely to be an
indicator of impaired endogenous fibrinolysis, a multicenter team
reports in the January issue of Stroke: Journal of the American
Heart Association. In a study reported in The Lancet in 1994,
researchers with the Cardiovascular Health Study showed that
older men, mean age 62, with TPA antigen levels higher than the
95th percentile had a 4-fold increased risk of stroke.
