    Are Likely to Be for Treatment, not Prevention

The first of several experimental cancer vaccines may be 
considered by the Food and Drug Administration for approval 
sometime this year, a step toward fulfilling scientists' 
longstanding dream of enlisting the body's immune system to 
fight malignant tumors.

>From colon cancer and malignant melanoma to breast and prostate 
cancer, scientists are manipulating tumor cells to design 
treatments that will target the patient's cancer much as a vaccine 
provokes an immune response to infection. Rather than prevent 
disease, these cancer vaccines are being used to treat patients, 
by mounting a specific immunological defense against malignant 
cells in the body.
