Are Likely to Be for Treatment, not Prevention
[01/05/99; Washington Post]
The first of several experimental cancer vaccines may be
considered by the Food and Drug Administration for approval
sometime this year, a step toward fulfilling scientists'
longstanding dream of enlisting the body's immune system to
fight malignant tumors.

cancer, scientists are manipulating tumor cells to design
treatments that will target the patient's cancer much as a vaccine
provokes an immune response to infection. Rather than prevent
disease, these cancer vaccines are being used to treat patients,
by mounting a specific immunological defense against malignant
cells in the body.
