Genetic breakthroughs open new avenues for cancer treatment
BAR HARBOR, Jul 29 (Reuters) - Dr. Victor McKusick of Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, opened Press Week '98
here in Bar Harbor, Maine, with the comment that the last year in
genetics has been the "best yet." One important genetic advance
in the past year was the discovery of "borders" to imprinted
regions of the genome, Dr. Andrew Feinberg, also of Hopkins,
told meeting attendees Monday. Studies performed in his lab show
that imprinting affects regions of the genome containing 10-20 or
more genes, rather than individual genes. These regions are
bordered by non-imprinted domains, Dr. Feinberg explained.
