Christine,
Here's what he said. I think I might frame it! :-)
"Dear Jean,
I've been meaning to write to you for quite awhile. I've intended to do
it on numerous occasions, but when it came right down to it I could never
think of enough to say that would come close enough to compensating for
all the lost time. I still can't. I don't wear my heart on my sleeve
and it takes a lot for me to open up to others, even those I care about
deeply. I'm very happy to know that you and Tom and Shannon and Michael
are doing well. (Note from Jean: I've sent him newsletters now and
then.) I look forward to hearing from you (real) soon. I'm much better
at responding to conversation than initiating it. Thanks for your last
letter. P.S. I sat here for an hour just to get this much out."
Y'know, it's easy to adopt a victim mentality when you've lived in an
abusive alcoholic home, so I always figured he didn't call, visit, or
write to me because he just didn't care about me. I guess this e-mail
message blows that theory out of the water, huh? :-)
-Jean
