Actually the Spence just ties in as an off-shoot of our Sawyer line. 
Seems my ancestor - good ol' George Sawyer - married 3 times.  I descend
from his marriage to Mary Whitehurst, not his marriage to Mary Spence. 
But my grandmother (a Gary of Lunenburg, VA) always claimed (although
nobody was ever able ot substantiate it) that we descended from English
royalty.  She even wrote down the purported lineage.  I think we
descended back through the Cranston line into royalty, but who really
knows??  I'm sure you know how confusing all of this genealogy stuff can
be!!
