Many women find body hair a nuisance, but for some, an
overabundance may indicate something more serious. According to
researchers from the University of Buffalo, the high blood levels of
male hormones that contribute to the growth of excess body hair
may also increase the risk for breast cancer in postmenopausal
women by 33 percent. Risk also rises for premenopausal women
who are "apple-shaped" -- that is, who carry extra weight in the
abdomen -- and those who have very oily skin. Researchers hope
these physical traits will be useful signs in screening women for
breast cancer risk.
