Dr. Fatih Uckun Awarded Leukemia Society of America Grant
ST. PAUL, Minn., July 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Leukemia Society of America
awarded a $324,000 grant to Dr. Fatih Uckun, director of the Hughes
Institute
in Roseville, MN. This three-year grant allows Dr. Uckun to translate
his most
recent research discovery of the survival mechanisms operative in
leukemia
cells into effective treatment programs for T-cell leukemia and
lymphoma.
Dr. Uckun's accomplishments have long been recognized by the Leukemia
Society
of America. In 1986 he received a Special Fellowship Award, in 1989 he
received a Leukemia Society of America Scholar Award and in 1992 he was
named
a Stohlman Scholar of the Leukemia Society of America. "I am grateful to
the
Leukemia Society of America for the continued commitment to our common
cause
of finding a cure for all children who are diagnosed with leukemia,"
said Dr.
Uckun.
T-cell leukemia in children has always been associated with poor
treatment
outcome. It accounts for 10 percent of all leukemias and affects
primarily
black boys over the age of 10. Earlier this year, Dr. Uckun and his
colleagues
reported significant progress in the treatment of T-cell Leukemia. Their
work
represents the continuation of a strong collaborative effort between the
Hughes Institute -- a leader in drug discovery against childhood cancer
and
AIDS and the Children's Cancer Group -- the largest clinical research
organization in the country. Using a combination of chemotherapies they
have
brought the cure rate from less than 50% to greater than 75%. The
results of
these studies were reported earlier this year in Blood, the official
journal
of the American Society of Hematology. "While this improvement is
substantial,
we are not completely satisfied," stated Dr. Uckun. "We are working to
develop
new agents to bring the cure rate of T-cell leukemia to 100 percent."
The treatments developed by Dr. Uckun and funded by this grant trigger
starvation in leukemia cells. These developments were recently published
in
Clinical Cancer Research.
The research funded by this grant will be conducted under Dr. Uckun's
leadership at the Parker Hughes Cancer Center Consortium of Institutes
including Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.,
Children's
Hospital Los Angeles, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Children's
Hospital and
Medical Center in Cincinnati, OH.
