I wanted to bring to your attention a new Web site, called the
Patient
Advocacy Home Page (http://uhec.udmercy.edu/picct/risinglo.htm), that
would
be very helpful to those of you looking for the best treatment for your
cancer. Composed by a volunteer patient advocate who has helped over 500
families in the past 14 years, it contains:
1) The inspirational story of a "terminal" cancer survivor who beat
overwhelming odds by finding a phase II clinical trial.
2) Instructions on how you can be a patient advocate for yourself or a
loved
one.
3) Links to other cancer web sites containing clinical trial
information,
including Medline and PDQ, where you can research cancer treatments.
4) A chance to tell about your own experiences in looking for cancer
care in
an online, university-sponsored research survey.
As a pathologist, I know of too many cancer patients who do not take
advantage of the newer advances in cancer treatment that are available
in
clinical trials. This site teaches you how to improve your chances of
finding
newer and better treatments for cancer.
