[MOL] "Cooking" the spleen and liver

A recent issue of SCIENCE NEWS (June 27, 1998, p.407) reports on
research in using ultrasound to reduce blood loss when operating on the
liver or spleen, two organs prone to excessive bleeding during surgery.

Yes, these organs with spongy fragile tissue are in plain terms
'cooked,' and preliminary findings in animals reports it to be superior
to cauterization by electric heaters or lasers. The Dept. of Defense is
contributing to the research in the hopes of developing a field
technique to stop internal bleeding in troops in combat.
