Dear CAthy,
The hearing loss was a result of the numerous chemotherapy treatments,
primarily from Cisplatin. I believe if you will check with the
audiology dept of any oncological hospital facility and/or the National
Cancer Institute they will provide you with information that describes
secondary side effects to specific chemotherapies. Now in some cases and
especially for short term like maybe 6 treatments, hearing losss maybe
temporary, but in Barbs case the 22 treatments of cisplatin, the 9
treatments of taxol/carboplatin had a definite permanent effect on her
hearing and nerve damage. She had several audiology tests and the loss
was considered permanent as a result of 3 years and 41 treatments of
chemo. NOw we pray and hope and meditate that some loss is temporary,
but we were told after the audiology tests that her loss was permanent.
Hope this answers. Now that may not be the case with everyone, but
prolonged chemo treatments does cause hearing loss. WE just paid
approximately $6,000 for digital hearing aids that differentiate between
vowels and consonants that bring the words into distinction for her in
order for her to hear words clearly. It truly helps. The hearing aids
that are less in cost just turns up volume and that is not what Barb
needs. She can't distinguish or understand the words that you are saying
even when you shout. The shouting becomes more undistinguishable. She
lost about 70% of her hearing.
NO, these things would not have happened. It was the treatments of
chemo. That is what we were told by Oncology and Audiology
Take care and hope in my little way I have explained this clearly.
God Bless
marty
Take care Cathy, Hope this answers your question.
