Yes, AML is a very difficult cancer in later life but that does not mean
that they give up on her and just wait for her to die. One of our
members, Ron, has fought AML for some time now and both he and his
oncologist refuse to give up. There are new clinical trials every month,
new chemo combinations to try and new aproaches to attacking leukemia are
being developed now.
Is your Mom being treated at a teaching medical or cancer center? Is she
being treated by an oncologist? If you let me know the state that you
reside in, I'll send you information on the nearest National Cancer
Institute (NCI) affiliated Cancer Center. Please take Lillian's advice
and call the National Cancer Institute at 1-800-4CANCER and discuss your
Mom's case with a representative. They will provide information on the
latest clinical trials and where they are being offered. Don't be shy in
asking questions of NCI representative and of your Mom's doctor. You
both will be in my prayers and know that you, are now a care giver to
your Mom and are very important to you Mom's treatment.
