RE: [MOL] I'm new

Mary:
My Dad was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in January 1996. Although the
tumor wasn't very large, the location required a permanent colostomy. He
underwent both chemo and radiation after his surgery as there was some lymph
node involvement, He adapted very well to the colostomy and went back to
work (he's a mason) when he was finished with his treatments. In September
1997, he had a routine cat scan which found a tumor the size of a golf ball
in his pelvis. So far, his liver is still clear. The tumor was deemed in
operable (plus my father would have refused it had surgery been an option
because he felt angry) and he was being treated with chemo (5FU and
Leucovorin), no radiation. After 6 months on the chemo another cat scan
revealed that the tumor had not shrunk at all. My father felt very ill on
this chemo - he was told this was a mild chemo and many people work while
undergoing treatments - HA! easy for them to say. Then he started CPT-11 (
a stronger chemo according to my Dad's oncologist). We were prepared for
the worst. So far, my Dad has felt 10 times better on the so called
"stronger" chemo. He's been walking everyday and even his skin color looks
better. He has some days when he feels tired but for the most part, he's
been feeling alot better than we were led to believe. Just goes to show
that the doctors don't always know everything nor can they predict how
different individuals respond to the same treatements. Mary, I don't know
if this helps but know that I a well aware of the fears you are facing as I
face them everyday too. Keep the faith.
God Bless, Cathy.
