A new migraine drug that can be taken as a pill with water or
dissolved straight on the tongue won approval from the U.S. Food and
Drug Administration Tuesday. Merck & Co. Inc. said the FDA approved
two versions of the drug - one taken in the normal pill form and
another using a new technology that lets it dissolve straight on the
tongue. Merck said that Maxalt, known generically as rizatriptan
benzoate, worked well in trials of more than 2,000 migraine patients.
"In these studies, approximately seven in 10 patients who took Maxalt
10 mg reported pain relief at two hours; six in 10 patients who took
Maxalt 5 mg reported pain relief at two hours." See
