    Maybe I can help with this. This is probably PV or polycythemia vera, a
form of myeloproliferative disorder that manifests itself by an
overproduction of red blood cells. Often times a patients hematocrit will be
in the 50's or above. Often controlled by giving blood "much like they did
by bloodletting in the 1800's" This will reduce the red blood count. She may
have other drugs prescribed to control the proliferative cell production.
