RE: [MOL] i have been away

Great help Betsy.

Tell me more about your mom. How old is she? When was cancer first
detected? The whole 9 yards, please.

Ben,

I can relate to what you are going through with your daughter, my mom
has sarcoma that has moved into her liver and lungs. (leiomyosarcoma)

I think sarcoma means that the tumor started growing in the soft
tissues (the lining of organs, body cavities and muscles), I am sure
there are others with more accurate definitions. They did not give
mom a very good prognosis, but I am happy so say that she is doing
better than the Dr.s ever thought she would.
I can only tell you what we have gone through, and offer encouragement
to you and Maevis through this trial. Mom had chemo with a drug
called adriamycin (also called doxorubicin). Supposedly this is
pretty potent stuff.

The doctor's gave us all the standard warnings about side effects,
saying that it could get pretty nasty. Luckily, mom did not have any
problems with the chemo at all. They put her on compazine for the
nausea and that seemed to work great. Her white cell count never
really dropped, and the tumors stopped growing for about 8 months.
The other drug we tried was ifosfamide, this we had quite a bit of
trouble with, bladder and kidney problems, but nothing we couldn't
handle. These are the only drugs we have worked with, our onc didn't
want to try combination drugs at all, so I don't know about them.
It is sad that your onc doesn't spend enough time explaining things to
you. You might consider talking about this with him and if that
doesn't work, would you consider switching Dr.s? I don't know how
often that is done, but this is pretty important stuff you will have
to deal with and you need to be dealing with someone you trust.
I don't know if this is of any help, let me know if there is anything
further I can do for you.
Take Care and God Bless,
Betsy Schrock
