I am hoping someone in the group can give us some advice re: Colon
Cancer.
A very close family member in Guatemala City, Central America has been
diagnosed with Colon Cancer. The method of therapy has been (because
they caught it early) mainly chemo. However, I received word this
weekend that the doctors in Guatemala had to do an emergency colonostomy
(a pouch) due to blockage. Apparently, he began vomitting and began
feeling poorly so he was rushed to the hospital.
Now, so far the doctors say that they are waiting for the chemo to
reduce the size of the tumor before they make an attempt to operate --
the tumor is located within the wall and protruding out. For now they
are continuing the chemo treatment.
My question: the patient (a cousin) is a physician (pediatrician) he
did a fellowship at Stanford and has a few friends here (I work at
Stanford). I hear from my cousin's wife that if things don't start
looking better they will fly here for a second opinion. Getting back to
my question ... shouldn't he try to do this now ... at least be in
contact with someone here to advice them of the present therapy. My
cousin is only 37 years old and recently married with 2 babies -- and a
great doctor -- not only does his family need him but his country does
too. I feel time is really important here.
I would appreciate what ever advice anyone can give.
