Dear Ruth,
Usually, a small amount of air in an iv line doesn't cause a problem, it is
important to remove as much as possible though. As to what happens when an
iv backs up, it is often caused by what we call 'tissueing' basically what
happens is the canula comes out of the vein and there is no where for the
fluid to go, so it (and your blood!) moves up the iv line. It sounds much
worse than it is. Most often a new line is inserted. Thee are other
problems which can do the same thing, but none of these are medically too
worrying. However, when you are the patient, it is a totally different
story, EVERYTHING is scary when you don't understand what is going on, or
why a procedure is done a certain way.... As for chemo treatments, here in
Australia, there is a lot of debate on which order drugs should be given.
Some say it doesn't make a difference, Others (myself included) feel that
they should be given in the most effective (and least side-effects) order.
I have rambled a bit, but I hope some of this helps. I'll get off my soap
box now.
Love
Marianne
