My father was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer on July 10, 1997. He was
thought to have limited cancer, as it had not spread to his bone marrow. He
underwent a course of chemotheapy, including cistoplatinum (?). He also had
numerous radiation treatments. In October, his chest x-ray appeared normal. He
believed he was cured. In December he began experiencing dizziness. In
January, we learned the cancer had spread to his brain. He died on February
8. I wish I could be more encouraging. He died of a staph infection, but he
brain tumor caused serious personality changes. He did have radiation of the
brain, which was suppose to give him three months. He died in only 6 weeks,
with no appreciable quality of life. I would not encourage someone to seek
aggressive treatment of this disease in the metastatic phase. I am so sorry.
He had eight months, which is typical.
