Dear Diana and All,
Vitamin C and the much spread about media about the problem with mega
doses of vitamin C _(that is one operative word, mega doses) that
vitamin C breaks down genetics, DNA. I have called the Livingston
Foundation this morning and this is what they say. "That this
information is not knew, its just revitalized because of the study just
concluded in Great Britain. NOw if you read the article it says that 30
HEALTHY men and women were in a study and concluded that there is a
break down of their healthy genes or DNA which may be one of the
contributing factor to cardiovascular, heart problems and possible
cancer as a breakdown of the DNA but essentially not the contributing
factor since there are so many other factors involved that contribute to
the breakdown as well as in carcinogenics, ecological, toxins we
breathe, etc.. NOw, the operative word is HEALTHY. Linus Pauling for
many years concluded in vast, many studies that when there is a
deficiency in the immune system to begin for instance with cancer or
colds, then megadoses of vitamin C is the one vitamin that will
strengthen the immune system or revitalize maybe moreso than any other
vitamin. so in a sense Vitamin C has been found in those with immune
deficiencies to rather be beneficial. So, the answer at this point
is.....as far as I can tell and understand that megadoses that are taken
on a consistent basis, say in excess of 500 mg in those individuals who
are healthy may be prone to some form of disease, but the liklihood when
taking this as a daily vitamin containing all the other supplements and
vitamins is not likely.
Now there is a difference of vitamin C's The one that was alluded to in
the studies are the supplements, not the fresh vitamins found fruits. It
is our opinion that we gain and benefit first from eating the 5-9 daily
fresh fruits and vegatables first and foremost as that is where we get
our source of vitamins from and then use a good one a day vitamin to
supplement. It was very vague in the study that whether the supplement
was taken without providing those people who were in the study the daily
nutrition that the supplement was to compliement. In other words, if you
just take the daily vitamins without taking the foods that it is to
compliment then the vitamins or the supplements will not work since
there is no source of nutrition in our system in the first place. In
other words, once again, any product that is a supplement is worthless
unless there is a food that it is to compliment. So, if you eat carrots
which carry a good source of beta-carotene, vatamin A, then the
supplement that contains a vitamin A will support the food product.
Taking a pill alone without first nourishing the immune system will only
in the long run cause harm, such may be the case with the vitamin C
studies. That is my opinion , but I will learn more. As you know the
media tends to write just what they want the public to hear and many
times it is inconclusive.
HOpe this helps and I will keep you and all posted. Barb takes 16,000 mg
a day of vitamin C. but you have to know where her immune system was in
the first place.
God Bless YOu
your friend
