Todd, I am really sorry to hear about your mother and I know that it is
frightening for all of you right now. I was diagnosed last November with
adenocarcinoma of the lung and had my right lung removed at age 44.
The first thing I would like to tell you is that adenocarcinoma is becoming
one of the leading cancer diseases of non-smoking women. I have found that
the minute you tell anyone that you have or are dealing with lung cancer,
they assume that you smoked and as such it is your fault. It is not your
fault, whether you smoked, had been around second hand smoke or not it is
cancer and we do not know what causes this kind of cancer.
You ask if there is hope and my dear Todd let me tell you that there
absolutely is hope. You will find that they will offer statistics and that
will make your mom and all of you feel less hopeful, but that is exactly
when you need to feel the most hope. The power of the mind is so important
when dealing with cancer and what you believe in can be the outcome.
I myself have alot of faith in God and I find that it deepens as I go
further with the cancer journey. Its like I told my oncologist when he gave
me my statistics; even if you tell me I only have one chance in 100, then
someone has to be the one and I believe it will be me. Also I believe that
God has a time that He calls us home and even if I were cured of cancer
completely and He is ready to call me home, then something else will happen
to take me there, but that is something that only God knows, not a doctor.
I would like to ask you how you would like to be directed as far as learning
more of this cancer. There are many sites that you can go to on the
internet and we can certainly provide you with many of those. There are
wonderful books that you can get that will help you and your mom to deal
with the journey that she has begun as a cancer survivor. There are sites
about chemo and clinical trials taking place in researching for cures. I
would be happy to provide you with any information that you desire, if you
will just let me know which direction you are looking to go first.
Todd, stay here with this forum. You will find that there are cancer
survivors with many different types of cancer and caregivers and loved ones
for those who are experiencing the cancer journey. There will be very many
types and ways of dealing with it, but you never know when something will be
just what you need to hear and that is why we are all here. You will also
find that you will share and in sharing there is strength for others and for
you. I look forward to helping you in anyway that I can. I will put your
mom and you in my prayers and I will pray for His strength, comfort and
understanding to enfold you. May God Bless you.
.........Carla.....
