Dear Carol,
Sorry to hear about your husband. I am in Connecticut, my husband has
colon cancer and is doctoring at UConn Medical Center. We took him for
second opinions to Dana-Farber in Boston and Memorial Sloan-Kettering
in Manhattan. You can access both on the internet. Sloan is
www.MSKCC.org. It will give you the number to call for an appointment.
When you call a nurse will answer the phone. They are knowledgeable and
very helpful. The one I dealt with was Maura MacEvoy, you can ask for
her. She was just great and will do the work for you, setting you up
with a specialist for a second opinion or whatever you need. When the
appointment is set up the MD's secretary or scheduler will call you,
give you the MD's name, phone number and name and number of his
secretary. They will also tell you what time to show up for
pre-registration and where. We took the train to NYC since driving
there is insane, and stayed at Lyden Gardens Hotel in a junior suite,
bedroom/sitting-room and full kitchen. They are part of Manhattan East
Suite Hotels at 1-800-me-suite. There is a grocery store on the corner,
restaurants everywhere and only a short few blocks walking distance to
the hospital. It is expensive to stay there, but if you decide to go
there, tell them that you are going to Sloan-Kettering and they will
give you a special rate. Ours was $185.00/day. Like I said it was
expensive but worth it for the two days that we spent there. This is
quite wordy, I know, but we were very impressed with Sloan and how
helpful they were. Good luck.
Mary Lou
