[MOL] To Ervin, Chinese herbs

Dear Ervin,

Sorry but I didn't see your first message about Chinese medicine. I guess you
are talking specifically about China No. 1, since you attach a message
addressed to me about that. At the moment a friend of mine is in China,
visiting a relative who is very ill, and she is making inquiries about it. I
no longer have the original messages about China No. 1, but I know they have a
site on the Web, and someone wrote a long letter to mol-cancer giving a few
examples of people who said they had benefited from the product. I myself know
nothing about it, except that it is expensive. On her initial inquiry to a
Chinese doctor during her present visit, she was told it is very strong and
not indicated in the case of her relative, who is an elderly gentleman who
recently had his stomach removed. She said she will find out all she can about
its possible use by me for my acute leukemia.

If you are talking about the availability of Chinese medicine in general,
again there are various places on the Web. You can get books that deal with
herbal remedies, and I think I saw one in a New York bookshop that dealt
specifically with Chinese medicine. If you live in or near a big town with a
Chinatown, there are bound to be Chinese pharmacies. Don't be shy. Go in and
ask. No doubt they could direct you to a Chinese herbalist. Let me say right
here, though, that some of the mixtures can be very offputting. They take a
lot of preparation, and some of them smell quite strong. I knew a guy who was
boiling a preparation for his high blood pressure. He was getting the herbs
from an excellent herbalist. But he wasn't sure they were really working, and
his wife said he had a choice: the herbs or her. The smell of the preparation
was more than she could bear. He chose her! He is still around, so I guess he
is back on blood-pressure pills.

Obviously, if you are serious about Chinese medicine, it is best to find
yourself a Chinese doctor. But I have heard they can be very expensive. The
yellow pages might help you here.

An e-mail friend, who lives on the other side of the world, has told me her
(Western) doctor is very cautious about herbs in general because they can
contain bacteria and should be examined before you start taking them. My
doctor has said nothing to me about this. I have purchased Chinese herb
capsules from a site on the Web. It is called Herbal Doctor Remedies, located
in Monterey Park, California. If you look it up on the Web, you will find a
long list of products for different conditions. I got delivery in two days,
and I'm on the East Coast. I cannot vouch for the quality of the product, but
the service is good, and I am taking them as additional supplemention. I
realize they are unlikely to be as good as a formula specifically designed for
you, but they are not very expensive, they are in ready-to-take capsule or
tablet form, and my oncologist thinks there's no harm in taking them. I just
looked up the card that came with my last supply. The owner of the company
seems to be Dr. Bob Shen, OMD, and his number is 213-263-3182. The toll-free
order number is 800-6000-808. Oh, and the Web address is
http://www.herb-doc.com I suggest you look them up on the Web first. See
what you think.

Chinese supermarkets have available ready-made packages of ingredients for
different conditions. This is what I had when I was in hospital -- I mentioned
in my recent note how a friend delivered soup to me in a thermos.
Unfortunately, the directions given on the packages are in Chinese. This
friend of mine had contacted a doctor in China and determined which package
she should obtain for me. In my case the herbs were boiled with a very small
chicken, bones and all, until the chicken was thoroughly cooked. Then it was
strained and the liquid was put in the thermos. On another occasion, she used
a special kind of fish, which involved a thorough search of Chinatown, but
frankly I found the chicken version much more palatable.

Now that gives you the extent of my knowledge on Chinese herbs. I hope it
helpful in some way, and at least points you in the right direction.

Good luck, and God bless.

-- Ron

PS. :-) By the way, it helps, if you want to be sure a specific person gets
your e-mail, to put that person's name in the subject box.
