Dear John C
So sorry about your Dad. Was he on Cisplatin or Carboplatin? There are
numerous chemos that they are using for NSCLC.
My brother, Gene (a young 62) was dx 3/97 with NSCLC, stage 111b.
He had 25 radiation treatments and started chemo combo at same time,
which he is still on. He has treatment every week, first 2 weeks are
Cisplatin/Navelbine, next 2 weeks are Navelbine alone.
His large tumor (larger than orange) is about 1/7 original size, lymph node
is middle of chest is normal looking now (whatever that means) size wise
I'm sure.
PET scans are now approved by Medicare, this is the best available and
latest means of determining size, type, location, mets, etc.
Do you talk with ONC? What were his suggestions in lieu of the platin based
chemos.
I talk with people re lung cancer, lots of options, taxol, a new drug which
has not been approved for lung cancer yet, but is being used in trials with
good results is Taxotere(FDA approved for breast cancer) another
chemo is Gemzar (Germicidine (SP).
Has your dad had radiation treatment? New types of Radiation is also out
there with less side effects than regular radiation, its called Precision
Therapy,
along with several other names, but they are all similar, they use CT of
person,
make form to fit where radiation is needed and direct beams at tumors instead
of whole chest (for example).
Call 1-800-4-Cancer and tell them what you are looking for, they will send
you immediately lots of information re drugs, trials, etc.
Also there are lots of information on web. Go to Medicine on line and type
in NSCLC adeno.
It will also give you staging information.
Hope this has helped. If you have problem finding information, let me know
and I will send you site addresses.
Take Care
God Bless
Diana
